BEST PLACES TO VISIT IN ANDAMAN

THE CELLULAR JAIL

Famously known as Kaala Paani, Cellular Jail in Port Blair is an old colonial prison that exiled Indian political prisoners like Veer Savarkar, Yogendra Shukla and Batukeshwar Dutt during the British Raj. The site bears testimony to the erstwhile days of British rule. It is presently converted into a memorial museum and organizes a light and sound show to highlight the plights of the freedom fighters.

HAVELOCK ISLAND

Officially named Swaraj Dweep, Havelock island is one of the largest and the most popular island in the Andaman archipelago. The island is named after British General Henry Havelock and spreads across an area of 113.93 sq. kms. It is adorned with pristine white beaches like Radhanagar beach, Vijaynagar beach, Elephant beach and Kalapathar beach. The last two beaches are reputed for their breathtaking sunrise and sunset views. The island is also a hub of aqua sports like deep-sea diving, scuba diving, sea walking, kayaking and snorkeling. You can also go on a ride across the coastline on rental scooters.

NEIL ISLAND

Neil island, officially named Swaraj Dweep, belongs to Ritchie’s Archipelago. It is located 18 kms southwest of Havelock. The island is a popular pick amongst tourists for its three wonderful beaches namely, Bharatpur, Lakshmanpur and Sitapur. The water surrounding Neil is perfect for water sport activities like snorkeling, sea walking and scuba- diving. Bharatpur beach especially is deemed to be a haven for adrenaline junkies. Tourists may also opt for glass-bottomed boat rides to view the exotic marine lives. Very recently, a major portion of the island has been converted for rice cultivation. However, the island is less urbanized and smaller as compared to Havelock. Therefore, tourists flock to this place and even explore the island on rental bikes and bicycles.

ROSS ISLAND

Ross island, now renamed Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose island, is located 2 kms east of Port Blair. Once home to the British officials, the island now lies in shambles. The island is famous mostly for its archaic remains and is steeped in nostalgia. The primary places of attraction are the Presbyterian church, the Cemetery, Chief Commissioner’s Bungalow, Officer’s quarters and the Bakery and the Printing Press. Tourists may also get a glimpse of peacocks and deer roaming around on the islands. The animal lives are protected by the government caretakers working under the administration. Other important places are the Old Lighthouse, Ferar beach and Smritika Museum.

BARATANG ISLAND

Also known as Ranchiwalas island, Baratang is situated about 100 kms away from Port Blair. Baratang is not as urbanized as the other islands and serves the best purpose of a brief getaway. The island is nature’s favourite as it is adorned with mangroves, mud volcanoes and limestone caves. Some of the most delightful activities on the island include boating, light treks, hikes and bird watching. Another famous spot on Baratang island is Parrot island. Thousands of unshackled parrots fly to this island as a part of their daily routine. Hence, this site is ideal for bird-watching.
